12-Year-Old Chess Prodigy Challenges Nakamura

Michelle Zhang, not yet a teenager, displayed remarkable skill in a faceoff against renowned chess player Hikaru Nakamura at the Maritime Open Chess Championship in Summerside, P.E.I. Zhang, a 12-year-old from Halifax, engaged Nakamura in a challenging match that lasted 65 moves. Despite Nakamura’s unexpected participation in the tournament, Zhang, a chess enthusiast since the age of 6, competes regularly in the event.

Nakamura, a prominent chess streamer with over three million YouTube subscribers, is highly regarded in the chess community. His presence at the tournament created a buzz among players and fans, with many seeking autographs and interactions with him. Nakamura viewed his involvement in the tournament as a way to give back to the chess community and reminisced about his own experiences as a young player meeting grandmasters.

For Zhang, the match was a valuable learning experience, even though she expressed a desire for a better outcome. Nakamura, in a post-match recap on his YouTube channel, praised Zhang’s skills and analyzed the game in detail. Zhang found the recap educational and was pleased to hear that Nakamura had moments of concern during their match.

Despite the age gap of 25 years between them, Zhang remains focused on honing her skills and improving her game. She sees every opportunity to play and learn as a step towards her goal of continuous improvement in chess.
