The Competition Bureau is set to examine the impact of competition within the food supply chain on the pricing of groceries for Canadian consumers. This investigation will focus on three critical areas: production and processing, transportation and distribution, and retail pricing practices. By taking this comprehensive approach, the bureau aims to identify potential issues and explore policy measures that could enhance affordability.
Interim Commissioner of Competition, Jeanne Pratt, emphasized the significance of food costs to all Canadians and highlighted the role of robust competition in regulating prices. Pratt also encouraged industry stakeholders to provide their insights on the matter.
This new inquiry will expand on the findings of the bureau’s 2023 study on the retail grocery market, which indicated that increased competition could lead to price reductions and foster innovation. The finalized report, scheduled for release next spring, will present conclusions and suggestions for government actions to enhance competition throughout the food supply chain.
