Phones in southern Manitoba were abuzz with tornado alerts on Tuesday night, despite the distant threat for many recipients. Reports on social media indicated some individuals received over 20 alerts throughout the evening. Two tornadoes have been officially confirmed south of Winnipeg, with authorities from Environment and Climate Change Canada investigating the potential development of additional tornadoes in the region.
Tyler Samagalski, present at a bar in East Selkirk during the alert, mentioned how he and fellow patrons eventually began disregarding the continuous warnings on their phones as the weather outside did not indicate an imminent tornado threat.
The alerts, warning of tornadoes within the “mobile coverage area,” reached all devices connected to cellphone towers in the affected regions. This meant that individuals in Winnipeg could receive warnings about tornadoes near Niverville, over 30 kilometers away, due to their proximity to specific cellphone towers.
Environment Canada stated that an inquiry is ongoing to comprehend why some individuals received repeated warnings. Although no immediate changes to the warning system were mentioned, the agency hinted at a more focused system for thunderstorm and tornado alerts in the future.
Justin Oertel, a forecaster from the Weather Centre of Manitoba, highlighted the necessity of adopting a system similar to the one used in the United States, where warnings are issued only to those directly in the storm’s path. Oertel emphasized the urgency of implementing this change to alleviate alert fatigue among Canadians.
Residents expressed concerns over the excessive alerts, fearing that if a tornado were to hit urban centers like Winnipeg or Brandon, the warnings might not be taken seriously due to the frequency of false alarms. The need for more targeted and location-specific alerts was underscored by Jason Emmers, who received numerous notifications on the night of the storms.
Emmers, while appreciative of the warnings, stressed the importance of a more refined alert system to prevent panic or desensitization among recipients. He recounted his experience of receiving alerts hours before a tailored warning was issued by their local municipality.
In response to the overwhelming alerts, some individuals resorted to muting their devices. Concerns were raised about the impact of constant alerts on children with anxiety, prompting calls for more precise and informative alerts regarding the location and severity of tornado sightings.
