A criminal network believed to be behind a series of violent offenses in Ontario and Quebec has been disrupted following a cross-jurisdictional probe that led to 13 individuals being apprehended and more than 150 charges being filed, law enforcement officials revealed during a press briefing at York Regional Police headquarters on Monday.
Described as more of a collaboration of individuals from different factions and locations who united for violence driven by monetary gains rather than a conventional street gang, Superintendent Simon James of York police informed the media.
The alleged violent acts encompassed various incidents, including a shooting in a crowded emergency room in London, Ont., a homicide investigation in Rimouski, Que., an attempted shooting in Brampton, Ont., a shooting in a busy parking lot in Mississauga, Ont., an armed robbery at a bank in York Region, and a robbery at a cellphone store in Markham, Ont., all occurring in December 2024.
Addressing the severity of the incidents, Police Chief Jim MacSween of York emphasized, “These acts were brazen. They were brutal and are entirely unacceptable.”
The investigation involved officers from York police, Peel, Toronto, and London police departments, along with the Ontario Provincial Police and the Sûreté du Québec. Through the execution of six search warrants in five locations over recent months, authorities have linked over 150 charges to the 13 suspects.
Initially appearing unrelated, these incidents were later found to be interconnected through meticulous analysis and information sharing, as stated by James.
The group was reportedly engaging younger individuals, utilizing them for tasks such as driving, surveillance, and direct involvement in criminal activities. James noted the existence of a structured criminal organization comprising older members handling strategic aspects, while younger recruits supported them by executing instructions.
Investigators highlighted the involvement of minors as young as 14 in the criminal operations, driven by financial incentives and the belief that young offenders would face lenient consequences if caught.
London Police Service Chief Thai Truong recounted the unsettling gun violence incidents that shook the city on December 14, 2024, involving multiple gunshots fired at the London Health Sciences Centre’s emergency department doors.
In the course of the investigation, four firearms were confiscated, and authorities are actively seeking a 19-year-old man from Hamilton and a 24-year-old individual with no fixed address in connection to the case.
