“Ontario Lawyer Offers $2.5M Bail Proposal Amid Drug Trafficking Charges”

An Ontario attorney facing extradition charges in connection with an international drug trafficking network presented his bail proposal in court on Wednesday. Deepak Paradkar, a 62-year-old lawyer from Thornhill, Ontario, offered to abide by strict conditions during his bail hearing in Toronto, including 24/7 house arrest under the supervision of his wife and another relative as sureties. He also agreed to surrender all electronic devices except for his wife’s cellphone, which he can only use in her presence for specific purposes. Additionally, Paradkar proposed GPS monitoring and relinquishing his passport to the RCMP as part of his release conditions.

During the hearing, Paradkar emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that he and his wife were putting up $2.5 million each, representing almost all their assets, to secure his release. Furthermore, his wife’s cousin pledged $250,000 in support. Paradkar, dressed in a dark blue suit and light shirt, expressed the high stakes involved, describing the situation as a significant risk to their entire life.

Prosecutors argued against Paradkar’s release, citing concerns about public safety, maintaining trust in the legal system, and the potential flight risk he poses. Federal Crown lawyer Heather Graham referred to allegations that Paradkar played a crucial role in a well-organized criminal group that was willing to resort to violence, including murder. The indictment alleges that Paradkar misused his position as a defense lawyer to assist the organization, facilitating drug transportation and involvement in other illicit activities.

The accusations include claims that Paradkar advised Wedding on the murder of a federal witness and received compensation in the form of luxury items and cash drops. U.S. officials also identified him by the moniker “cocaine_lawyer,” a reference to his previous social media handle. The allegations against Paradkar and other Canadian suspects in the case have yet to be proven in Canadian courts, where extradition proceedings will take place.

Paradkar refuted claims of being a flight risk, emphasizing his lack of ties to countries outside of Canada and the significant personal sacrifices he would face by fleeing. He highlighted his health issues, including recent heart surgery and diabetes diagnosis, which require strict medication regimens under proper monitoring. Paradkar expressed concerns about the harsh conditions in the Toronto jails where he has been held, citing instances of delayed medication delivery and dangerous situations, such as violent inmate altercations.

During cross-examination, prosecutors delved into Paradkar’s financial situation and assets. His wife, acting as a surety, testified about her role in ensuring compliance with the bail conditions, stating that she would involve the police if her husband violated any terms of their proposed plan. The court proceedings will ultimately determine whether Paradkar and other accused Canadians will be extradited based on the charges brought forward by U.S. authorities.
