The prestigious Toronto International Film Festival unveiled five special presentations for this year’s event, marking their first major announcement following the previously disclosed opening-night film and gala presentations. Among the highlights of the 51st edition are the premieres of the science-fiction comedy “Alpha Gang,” the Argentinian thriller “Glaxo,” the romance film “Love of Your Life” starring Margaret Qualley, the Nazi hunting drama “The Housewife,” and the action film “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” featuring Mahershala Ali.
“Alpha Gang” is set to have its international premiere at the festival, signifying its debut outside its home country. Industry experts anticipate an earlier world premiere at the Telluride film festival due to its American origin. The other four films are slated for their world premieres at TIFF.
Directed by the Zellner brothers, “Alpha Gang” narrates the tale of aliens disguised as a 1950s biker gang sent on a mission to conquer Earth, only to face unexpected challenges when emotions come into play. The film, initially announced in October 2024, underwent several delays and cast changes before finalizing its ensemble, which includes Chris Pine, Lily-Rose Depp, and Cate Blanchett, among others.
Based on Hernán Ronsino’s 2009 novel, “Glaxo” explores a small-town drama where four friends’ lives take a transformative turn upon the arrival of a policeman and his wife, triggering a chain of desire and revenge. Director Benjamin Naishtat, known for his social and political narratives, is expected to delve into Argentina’s historical complexities in this production set in the 1950s-1980s.
In “Love of Your Life,” Margaret Qualley stars alongside Patrick Schwarzenegger in a poignant story of loss and romance. Produced by Ryan Gosling and helmed by Rachel Morrison, the film follows a widow’s journey to reconnect with a lost love, with Gabriel Basso recently joining the cast.
“The Housewife,” a psychological drama helmed by Canadian director Ben Shirinian, draws inspiration from a 1964 New York Times journalist’s investigation into a suspected Nazi officer in Queens, complicated by his unexpected bond with the officer’s wife. The cast includes Naomi Watts, Tye Sheridan, and Michael Imperioli.
Starring Mahershala Ali, “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” portrays a religious hitman navigating a personal crisis after his wife’s death, embarking on a perilous journey across Houston to protect his children while grappling with his faith. Directed by Bassam Tariq, the film promises an intense thriller akin to “John Wick,” featuring a star-studded cast and a teaser trailer release.
The Toronto International Film Festival is scheduled to run from Sept. 10 to 20, with the full lineup set to be unveiled on Aug. 11. Ticket sales will commence for TIFF members on Aug. 21 and open to the public on Aug. 31.
