In Newfoundland and Labrador’s political scene, a debate has sparked after a Christmas parade in the Trinity region featured a float with the Grinch, who is infamous for stealing Christmas in Whoville, behind bars under the slogan “jail not bail.”
Local Conservative MP Jonathan Rowe created the float, which drew mixed reactions. While some, like Port Rexton business owner John Fisher, saw it as clever politics, others found it out of place in a children-focused parade.
Fisher emphasized the importance of facts, fairness, and kindness in democracy, expressing concern that exaggeration and fear have no place in a Santa Claus parade.
Rowe defended his float by highlighting the Grinch’s criminal acts and advocating for tougher measures, stating that only Conservatives can ensure safety and restore Christmas cheer in Whoville.
While Rowe maintained a lighthearted tone, Fisher criticized the float, attributing it to Rowe’s inexperience and suggesting that he may learn from this misstep.
The float’s appearance coincides with ongoing debates between the federal Liberals and Conservatives over bail reform. Conservatives argue for stricter bail laws to prevent repeat offenders from reoffending, while the Liberals have introduced reforms to make bail regulations more stringent and increase penalties for repeat violent offenders.
