Université de Montréal Carabins Triumph in 60th Vanier Cup

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies entered the 60th Vanier Cup with a chance to secure their first national championship in almost 30 years. The game took place at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium in front of a crowd of nearly 9,000 fans. This stadium is also home to the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, who recently won the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg.

Despite high hopes for a victory and the opportunity to showcase Saskatchewan’s football dominance in Canada, the team faced a disappointing outcome as the Université de Montréal Carabins emerged victorious with a 30-16 win. This marked the Carabins’ second Vanier Cup triumph in three years, solidifying their football program as one of the nation’s strongest.

Throughout the game, the Huskies trailed, starting from the kickoff with a rouge. The standout performance of the Carabins’ rookie quarterback, Pepe Gonzalez, particularly in the second half, proved instrumental in securing the win. Despite the loss, Huskies quarterback Jake Farrell expressed pride in the team’s resilience throughout a challenging season.

Head coach Scott Flory acknowledged the team’s perseverance in facing various obstacles leading up to the national championship game. Despite the defeat, Flory emphasized the team’s accomplishments and the dedication of its players. Running back Ryker Frank highlighted the team’s unity as a key factor in their journey to the final game.

For many players, the Vanier Cup represented the end of their university football careers. Linebacker Seth Hundeby and receiver Daniel Wiebe reflected on their time with the team and expressed gratitude for the experience. Hundeby affirmed his ongoing support for the Huskies, emphasizing the enduring bond with the team.

As the Huskies regrouped after the loss, players and the head coach shared their reflections on the defeat. Despite the disappointment, the team remained proud of their efforts and camaraderie throughout the season. The Huskies’ commitment to each other and the program was evident in their post-game reactions.
