Tenisha Warner, the widow of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, known for his role on the 1980s hit show The Cosby Show, has initiated legal action against his mother, Pamela Warner, over his trust fund. The lawsuit, filed in DeKalb County Superior Court in Decatur, Georgia, seeks more than $1.2 million US from Pamela, who is in charge of the trust. This legal action coincides with the first anniversary of Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s passing at the age of 54 due to an accidental drowning while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica on July 20, 2025.
In her statement to CBC News issued through her legal representation, Tenisha Warner expressed her efforts to privately settle her late husband’s complex estate while honoring his wishes regarding their daughter, MacKenzie. She emphasized Malcolm’s intention to provide for their daughter and herself. Facing the responsibilities of single parenthood and sole financial support, Tenisha felt compelled to safeguard their rights within the legal framework.
The legal dispute revolves around a trust established in 1996, predating Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s relationship with Tenisha and the birth of their daughter. The trust designates all assets to other family members, primarily Pamela Warner, along with his father and half-sister. Allegations in the court documents suggest that funds from life insurance and retirement accounts, exceeding $1.25 million US, have already been distributed to these beneficiaries.
Tenisha Warner’s petition asserts that Malcolm failed to fulfill various financial commitments to his wife and daughter before his demise. Seeking over $1.27 million US, Tenisha requests the court to acknowledge her and their daughter as rightful beneficiaries, halt trust distributions during the legal proceedings, and provide a detailed financial report. The alleged outstanding obligations include a life insurance policy naming Tenisha as the sole beneficiary, anniversary gift provisions, Roth IRA contributions, and salary commitments.
Pamela Warner shared a heartfelt tribute on Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s memorial Instagram account to mark the one-year anniversary of his passing, reflecting on the emotional journey of grief and growth. Despite efforts to reach out to Pamela Warner’s representatives for comments on the lawsuit, there has been no response as of the publication deadline. The case is slated for hearings on September 23 and October 1 in Los Angeles.
