At a bail hearing in Toronto, the wife of a lawyer from Ontario allegedly involved in a cross-border drug trafficking network stated that she had never witnessed her husband receiving extravagant gifts or large sums of cash from clients during their many years together. The prosecutors are questioning Mandy Paradkar about the couple’s financial situation and professional activities as she gives her testimony.
Her husband, Deepak Paradkar, is among eight Canadians arrested last month on extradition warrants related to an FBI operation targeting Ryan Wedding, a former Olympic snowboarder suspected of becoming a drug kingpin. According to U.S. officials, Deepak Paradkar, 62, is accused of advising Wedding on the killing of a federal witness and introducing him to drug traffickers who distributed narcotics across North America. Allegedly, he was compensated with bulk cash drops and high-end items like watches, and was known by the alias “cocaine_lawyer” on social media.
During cross-examination by the Crown, Mandy Paradkar mentioned that while it’s not uncommon for lawyers to receive cash payments from clients, she did not find any of the amounts her husband received to be suspicious. She also stated that she never saw him receiving gifts from clients other than alcohol or chocolates.
The couple reportedly owns multiple properties, including a $5 million home and a cottage, leases four luxury cars, and has taken several expensive trips in recent years. They received a $700,000 insurance settlement earlier this year following a burglary where designer items and jewelry were stolen.
Despite the allegations made against her husband, Mandy Paradkar expressed her unwavering belief in his innocence. Deepak Paradkar has requested bail pending his extradition hearing, offering to abide by strict conditions, including house arrest and electronic monitoring. Additionally, he proposed a $5 million joint pledge with his wife as surety, with her cousin offering an additional $250,000. The law society has temporarily suspended Paradkar’s license to practice law.
