Justin Paul Campbell was visibly emotional during an interrogation at the RCMP detachment in Deer Lake on September 8, 2023. Corporal Nichole Park conducted the interview, which occurred a day after Campbell’s arrest for the alleged first-degree murder of his grandmother, Eva Banfield, and theft exceeding $5,000.
In a courtroom in Corner Brook, the Crown presented the jury with a recording of Campbell’s confession. He explained how he attacked Banfield from behind while she was washing dishes after a meal at their residence in Deer Lake. Campbell admitted to strangling her and using plastic wrap to suffocate her, all to fund his crack cocaine addiction.
Following the incident, Campbell transferred funds from Banfield’s credit line to his own account, fabricating stories to explain her absence to friends and family. The jury watched a video of Campbell’s confession, with some members becoming emotional as they viewed the disturbing footage.
During the trial, the Crown called witnesses, including medical examiner Christopher Hough, while the defense remained largely silent. Testimony from an undercover officer, Campbell’s friends, and Banfield’s acquaintances corroborated the confession.
Text messages and bank statements further incriminated Campbell, showing financial transactions and communications between him and Banfield leading up to her death. The trial is nearing conclusion as the defense prepares to wrap up without calling any witnesses.
The jury will receive deliberation instructions at the Corner Brook courthouse, scheduled for Friday. The case has gripped the community of Deer Lake, with residents grappling with the shocking details of the alleged murder.
