Expressing frustration, Sami Rasheed, a recent graduate from the University of Toronto business program, highlighted the discouragement he faces when advised to continue efforts he has already been making, insinuating doubts about his dedication and abilities.

Despite excelling academically and in work placements, Rasheed, who graduated last year, encountered a daunting job search experience, sending out over 1,100 applications and receiving only a few responses.

The prolonged struggle took a toll on his morale, with Rasheed recounting the emotional strain of facing repeated rejections and the financial insecurity resulting from the lack of employment opportunities.

The plight of young Canadians is reflected in the latest statistics from Statistics Canada, revealing a concerning 14.5% unemployment rate among individuals aged 15-24 in August, the highest recorded since 2010. Additionally, data from July indicated that only about 54% of young Canadians were employed, marking the lowest rate since 1998, excluding the pandemic’s peak months.

‘Hardworking Youth Deserve Understanding’

Contrary to claims implying a lack of effort among young job seekers, economics professor Mikal Skuterud emphasized the unwavering ambition and diligence exhibited by today’s youth.
