Mieka West and her family experienced a three-hour wait to cast their votes in Calgary’s municipal election on Monday. West, who voted at the Ward 9 Colonel Walker School polling station in Inglewood, described a lengthy line with around a hundred people who had been waiting for a considerable time. This voting experience was notably longer than her previous ones, usually lasting between five to 30 minutes, leaving her feeling that it was a waste of time.
Across the city, voters encountered long and slow-moving lines on Election Day, prompting questions about the unusual delays. In Ward 11, Chance Devlin opted not to vote due to the extended wait. Devlin later expressed regret, especially given the tight margin in the mayoral race between Jeromy Farkas and Sonya Sharp, where less than 600 votes separated the candidates.
University of Calgary political science professor Lisa Young also faced delays of over an hour when voting, attributing the slowdown to new provincial regulations. These regulations mandated poll workers to complete voter attestation forms for each voter, including personal details and signatures, in addition to hand-counting ballots.
Young criticized the changes, suggesting they were unnecessary for addressing voter confidence issues. She noted that while having more polling stations or election workers could have alleviated the situation, the associated costs were likely a deterrent.
In response to the election challenges, Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams shifted blame to municipalities, emphasizing their responsibility in conducting elections and their awareness of the new regulations. Williams defended the ban on electronic vote tabulators, citing the need for increased confidence in election results through manual ballot counting.
As stakeholders evaluate the election process, concerns raised by voters regarding misinformation at polling stations have emerged. Instances of missing ballots or ballots from the wrong ward were reported, impacting voters’ ability to participate fully in the electoral process. These discrepancies highlight the importance of ensuring a smooth and accurate voting experience for all citizens.
