U.S. President Donald Trump has played a significant role in brokering a deal to end the conflict in Gaza, potentially saving the lives of Israeli hostages and Palestinian civilians. This achievement marks a major diplomatic success for Trump, surpassing his predecessor Joe Biden by securing the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas since October 7, 2023, and facilitating the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
Although the deal still needs to be executed, it falls short of the “eternal peace” that Trump has touted. Nonetheless, even some of his staunchest critics are acknowledging his efforts. Former national security adviser John Bolton, who had criticized Trump in his 2020 memoir, praised the White House team for their role in the agreement.
Bolton speculated that Trump could be a contender for the Nobel Peace Prize if the deal proves sustainable, although it was recently awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. The ceasefire in Gaza was catalyzed by Trump’s intervention after Israel’s airstrike on Qatar, a move that displeased Trump and prompted him to push for reconciliation between Israel and Qatar.
The peace deal has been commended by various voices, including former Israeli negotiator Gershon Baskin, who emphasized the agreement as a declaration of the war’s end, not just a temporary truce. Experts like Michael Desch from the University of Notre Dame believe that Trump has the political leverage to implement his comprehensive 20-point peace plan, potentially leading to Palestinian self-determination and statehood.
While Trump has received praise from expected quarters, even late-night shows like The Daily Show have acknowledged his role in the peace deal. The unexpected recognition from diverse sources indicates the magnitude of this accomplishment in promoting peace in the Middle East.
