“NHL Suspends Mitch Love Amid Coaching Allegations”

The NHL has enforced a season-long suspension on Mitch Love following an inquiry into allegations that emerged during his pursuit of various head coaching positions across the league. Love, who previously held the role of assistant coach under Spencer Carbery for two years with the Washington Capitals, was terminated by the team concurrently with the suspension. The Capitals did not disclose specifics regarding the investigation but emphasized their commitment to upholding high standards of behavior and responsibility.

According to the NHL, Love’s suspension is due to behavior considered harmful to the league, pending a comprehensive review. Love has the option to seek reinstatement for the 2026-27 season under specific conditions. Aged 41 as of June, Love was seen as a strong contender for coaching roles in Pittsburgh and Seattle, among other potential opportunities. Prior to his tenure with Washington, Love served as the head coach for the Calgary Flames’ AHL affiliate from 2021 to 2023.
