American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been given a nine-month jail sentence by a Romanian court for drug possession. This ruling comes over a year after his performance at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti, Romania, where he was stopped by the police for allegedly smoking cannabis on stage.
During the festival in July 2024, Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was found with over 18 grams of cannabis in his possession, some of which he reportedly consumed while performing. The Constanta Court of Appeal made the final decision, convicting Khalifa of possessing dangerous drugs for personal use.
Earlier, a court in Constanta County had fined Khalifa 3,600 lei for illegal drug possession, but prosecutors appealed for a harsher penalty, resulting in the recent jail sentence. Romania has strict drug laws, with possession of cannabis for personal use carrying potential prison terms of three months to two years or a fine.
It remains uncertain if Romanian authorities will seek Khalifa’s extradition, as he is a U.S. citizen and does not reside in Romania. The 38-year-old rapper from Pittsburgh gained fame with his mixtape “Kush + Orange Juice” and was seen smoking a large cigarette on stage while performing his popular track “Young, Wild & Free” during the festival in Romania last summer.
