Pope Leo criticized the living conditions of Palestinians in Gaza during his Christmas sermon, deviating from the usual solemn and spiritual tone of the service commemorating Jesus’ birth. Leading his first Christmas Day mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, Leo emphasized the symbolism of Jesus being born in a stable as a representation of God’s presence among humanity.
Drawing attention to the plight of those in Gaza enduring harsh weather conditions, Leo questioned how one could ignore the vulnerable tents in Gaza subjected to rain, wind, and cold. Unlike his predecessor, Pope Francis, Leo typically refrains from making political statements in his sermons but has shown a more diplomatic approach.
In his Christmas blessing, the Pope, known for advocating for immigrants, also highlighted the challenges faced by migrants and refugees traversing the American continent. While addressing the issue of poverty and assisting strangers, Leo indirectly criticized policies like Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, emphasizing the importance of helping those in need.
Previous instances reveal the Pope’s repeated concerns about the situation in Gaza, stressing the necessity for a resolution to the prolonged conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, advocating for the establishment of a Palestinian state. Despite a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, aid access to Gaza remains inadequate, with a significant portion of the population lacking proper shelter.
During the Christmas service at St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo expressed sorrow over the struggles of homeless individuals globally and condemned the devastation caused by ongoing and past wars worldwide. Urging an end to all global conflicts, Leo, during the traditional urbi et orbi message, called for peace and unity while addressing various conflicts in countries like Ukraine, Sudan, Mali, Myanmar, Thailand, and Cambodia.
Regarding the situation in Ukraine, where Russian forces pose a threat, the Pope urged an end to violence and encouraged sincere and respectful dialogues with international support. For Thailand and Cambodia, amidst border clashes leading to casualties, Leo appealed for the restoration of their historical friendship to foster reconciliation and peace.
