“Fed Budget Targets 40,000 Job Cuts for Spending Reduction”

The federal public service head has stated that the budget’s aim to reduce spending and increase investments will lead to approximately 40,000 job losses through program cutbacks or eliminations. Michael Sabia, who serves as the Privy Council clerk, conveyed this message in a memo addressed to federal staff following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government unveiling its inaugural budget.

In the memo, Sabia highlighted the significant task of cutting $60 billion over five years, emphasizing the inevitable sacrifices that will accompany such a substantial financial adjustment. He acknowledged the genuine impact on individuals serving the nation and their families, refraining from downplaying the repercussions, stating, “They are real.”

Sabia outlined that to achieve the government’s outlined objectives, certain programs will face reductions or limitations in scope, while others will be completely discontinued. He mentioned that an estimated 40,000 fewer positions will be required within the public service, with some reductions already in progress. However, these job cuts are contingent upon the federal budget successfully passing through Parliament in the upcoming month.

To ensure swift decision-making and minimize uncertainty, Sabia assured that actions will be promptly taken once the cuts commence. Furthermore, he reassured that support will be provided to those impacted by layoffs or opting for early retirement.
