Denmark and Greenland Leaders Reject Trump’s Greenland Acquisition Plans

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland have called on U.S. President Donald Trump to halt his threats of acquiring Greenland, following his renewed interest expressed in an interview with The Atlantic magazine. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the United States has no authority to annex any of the three countries within the Danish Kingdom, labeling the talk of taking over Greenland as nonsensical.

Trump cited the necessity of Greenland for defense, asserting, “We do need Greenland, absolutely.” His statements came after the U.S. apprehended Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, with Trump declaring intentions to oversee the Latin American nation. This development sparked concerns in Denmark about similar actions being directed towards Greenland, a Danish territory.

Frederiksen urged the U.S. to desist from making threats against a longstanding ally and a nation that has explicitly stated its non-negotiable stance. Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the prime minister of Greenland, condemned Trump’s remarks, characterizing them as not only inaccurate but also disrespectful.

Trump’s appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland on December 21 reignited criticism from both Denmark and Greenland regarding Washington’s keen interest in the resource-rich Arctic island. Trump has been vocal about his support for Greenland’s integration into the United States, a sentiment echoed by Landry.

In a symbolic gesture, political adviser Katie Miller, spouse of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, posted a map of Greenland colored with the American flag on X, hinting at future developments. The island’s strategic location and mineral reserves are cited as key factors driving U.S. interest, with the aim of reducing dependency on Chinese exports.

Greenland, previously a Danish colony, holds the right to declare independence as per a 2009 agreement but relies significantly on Danish financial aid. Denmark has endeavored to mend relations with Greenland while navigating tensions with the Trump administration through investments in Arctic defense initiatives.
