Kalispell, a prominent travel destination in Montana, is extending a warm invitation to Canadian visitors by offering enticing deals and discounts through the newly introduced Kalispell Canadian Welcome Pass. Positioned near the Canada-U.S. border, approximately five hours south of Calgary, Kalispell is keen on rekindling Canadian tourism interest.
The Kalispell Canadian Welcome Pass encompasses offerings from 15 local businesses, presenting a variety of discounts on accommodations, retail, dining, and museum experiences. The decline in Canadian tourism to the United States has been attributed to factors such as the weakened Canadian dollar, the re-election of U.S. President Donald Trump, his remarks about incorporating Canada as the 51st state, and the ongoing trade tensions.
Diane Medler, the executive director of Discover Kalispell, highlighted the negative impacts of reduced border crossings and diminished international visitor spending on the region’s tourism-dependent economy. Despite acknowledging the challenges, Medler emphasized the importance of fostering connections and expressed a sincere desire to welcome back Canadian visitors.
In a similar outreach initiative, McKenzie McMillan, a travel consultant at the Vancouver-based Travel Group, noted efforts by destinations like Seattle, King County, and wine regions in eastern Washington to attract Canadian tourists with discounted rates and creative promotional campaigns. However, these endeavors have yet to significantly influence Canadian travel preferences.
McMillan raised concerns that existing campaigns fail to address the underlying reasons why Canadians are seeking alternative vacation spots. Although some successful examples, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom’s social media appeal, have emerged, the overall impact on encouraging Canadian tourism remains limited.
Meanwhile, Erin Crane, CEO of Tourism Lethbridge in Alberta, emphasized a broader approach to tourism promotion that targets both domestic and international visitors, including those from the United States. While Kalispell focuses on reigniting Canadian interest, other regions are adopting inclusive strategies to attract a diverse range of travelers.
