The United Nations humanitarian relief chief is calling on Israel to open all entry points to Gaza to facilitate a significant increase in aid distribution. Tom Fletcher, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, emphasized the urgency of the situation during his visit to the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza.
Fletcher expressed his emotional response to the visit, noting the backlog of supplies waiting to be delivered to Gaza. He stressed the need for a substantial escalation in aid delivery, with the goal of having “thousands of trucks per week” transporting essential items like food, medicine, and other supplies into the region.
While some humanitarian aid has started to flow through the Kerem Shalom and Kissufim crossings in Israel, Fletcher highlighted the importance of opening additional entry points such as Rafah to ensure that civilians receive the assistance they require. He emphasized that humanitarian aid should not be used as a bargaining tool, citing international laws and regulations.
Although Israel has indicated its intention to open the Rafah crossing for the movement of people, the government has stated that humanitarian aid will not be permitted through that entry point. This decision comes amidst ongoing tensions following a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, which was prompted by a deadly attack on Israel in 2023.
Despite the challenges and complexities involved, Fletcher expressed optimism about the situation. He expressed hope for positive developments regarding the Rafah Crossing in the near future. Samer Abdeljaber, the regional director for the World Food Program in Cairo, echoed the call for more entry points to be opened, emphasizing the importance of ensuring safe and efficient access for aid distribution within Gaza.
While aid trucks have started to enter Gaza, the region continues to face significant challenges, with limited medical care and a large homeless population. Relief organizations stress the need for a swift increase in aid operations to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, particularly for vulnerable groups like children. The rebuilding and reconstruction of Gaza are expected to be lengthy processes due to the extensive damage caused by past conflicts.
