Brazil edges Canada in U-17 World Cup shootout

Brazil eliminated Canada from the FIFA women’s under-17 World Cup with a penalty shootout victory in Rabat, Morocco. The match ended in a 5-4 shootout win for Brazil, with Gabi Pusch, Gi Iseppe, Kaylane, Pepe, and Andreyna converting their penalties. Despite efforts from Chloe Taylor, Amy Medley, Naomi Lofthouse, and Reed Tingley, Canada fell short as Brazil’s goalkeeper, Ana Morganti, saved Bridget Mutipula’s attempt.

The game was decided by penalties after a goalless 90 minutes. Brazil dominated offensively throughout the match, outshooting Canada 22-6, with a 7-2 advantage in shots on target. Canada, known for their strong offensive performance in previous matches, struggled to break through Brazil’s defense.

After this victory, Brazil advanced to face defending champion North Korea in the upcoming semifinal match. In other quarterfinal games, France will play against the Netherlands, and Mexico will face Italy.

This was Canada’s fifth appearance in the quarterfinals out of eight under-17 championship tournaments. Brazil, on the other hand, secured their first semifinal spot after shutting out China 3-0 in the previous round. The game took place at Olympic Stadium, where Canada made two lineup changes, and Brazil’s top scorer, Giovanna Waksman, remained on the bench due to injury.

The match saw several close opportunities for both teams, with Kaylane almost scoring for Brazil in the 54th minute and substitute Ravenna missing a chance in the 81st minute. Despite a late attempt by Canada’s Melyna Alexis, the Brazilian defense held strong.

Canada had a successful group stage, finishing on top of Group D with wins over Nigeria, Samoa, and France. Brazil secured their quarterfinal spot by finishing second in Group A, with a win against Morocco, a draw against Costa Rica, and a loss to Italy.
