A fundraising event to support victims of the recent wildfires is set to happen tonight in St. John’s and will be broadcast throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Chris Andrews, part of the organizing team for the We Stand on Guard Once More benefit concert, will also perform with his band Shanneyganock. Andrews expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the province during this time of need and highlighted the unique gathering of traditional Newfoundland acts for the show.
The concert, which is already sold out at the Jag Soundhouse in St. John’s, aims to raise significant funds not only from the live audience but also from viewers and listeners tuning in through local media channels. Andrews encouraged people to come together in homes, cottages, or sheds to watch and show support for their fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
This charitable initiative follows previous successful fundraisers for communities affected by natural disasters like Hurricane Igor in 2010 and post-tropical storm Fiona in 2022. The last concert raised $2.2 million for post-tropical storm Fiona relief in Newfoundland’s southwest region, with partial funding support from the federal government, although no similar commitments have been made this time.
All proceeds from the event will be directed to the Canadian Red Cross N.L. Wildfire Response Fund. The concert, hosted by CBC’s Damhnait Doyle and NTV’s Toni Marie Wiseman, features a lineup of renowned acts such as Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers, The Fables, The Ennis Sisters, and more.
To watch the event on Monday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m. NT / 7 p.m. AT, viewers can tune in to various platforms including CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Listen, and the CBC N.L. YouTube page.
