Ralph Priso equalized in the dying moments of stoppage time, and Belal Halbouni secured the victory in a penalty shootout as the Vancouver Whitecaps triumphed over FC Dallas in an intense playoff match on Saturday night. The Whitecaps sealed a clean sweep of the best-of-three first-round series in the Major League Soccer Cup playoffs after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
As a result of their win, the Whitecaps earned the right to host the Western Conference semifinal at B.C. Place stadium on Nov. 22. Vancouver, positioned as the second seed in the Western Conference, is set to face either Los Angeles FC or Austin in the upcoming conference semifinal match.
FC Dallas forward Petar Musa opened the scoring with his maiden MLS Cup playoffs goal in the 25th minute, putting Dallas ahead 1-0. However, Priso’s late header, which rebounded off rookie goalkeeper Michael Collodi after a save, leveled the score at 1-1 for the Whitecaps.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Halbouni’s successful strike proved decisive after goals from Vancouver’s Thomas Müller and Sebastian Berhalter, and Dallas’ Musa. Dallas’ Patrickson Delgago hit the crossbar, and misses from Vancouver’s Kenji Cabrera and Dallas’ Shaq Moore kept the tension high until Nolan Norris missed the final penalty kick for Dallas, securing the Whitecaps’ victory.
The Whitecaps had previously displayed dominance with a 3-0 victory in Game 1, where goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka made two crucial saves for Vancouver.
