Three youths have lost their lives, and a fourth is in critical condition following a single-vehicle accident on a gravel road close to Hanover. The tragic incident involved four teenagers, all students at John Diefenbaker Senior School in Hanover, aged between 15 and 17, according to West Grey Police Constable Allyson Iles.
Of the four teens, three—two boys and a girl—were ejected from the vehicle and tragically succumbed to their injuries at the crash site. The fourth teenager, a boy, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency responders. Initially taken to Hanover District Hospital, he was later airlifted by Ornge air ambulance to London, as confirmed by Iles. The accident occurred around noon on Concession Road 2 SDR near Allan Park Road.
The heartbreaking event transpired shortly after a Remembrance Day assembly at the school, while students were on a lunch break, as relayed by a concerned parent to CBC News. Constable Iles described the day as emotionally challenging for all first responders involved.
This tragedy strikes just half a year after another fatal crash claimed the lives of four teenagers and their teacher from the neighboring Walkerton community. The consecutive losses have deeply impacted the community, leaving many in shock and sorrow.
In the wake of this devastating incident, families and friends are rallying together to support one another through the grieving process. Sheena Sachs, a parent with children at JDSS, expressed the overwhelming sadness felt by the community, particularly emphasizing the profound loss of young lives and the unimaginable pain for the affected families.
Responding to the crisis, the Bluewater District School Board announced plans to dispatch a trauma response team to offer grief counseling and additional assistance. Recognizing the widespread impact of the tragedy on various school communities in Bluewater, the board extended condolences and acknowledged the significant loss felt by peers and staff.
Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson assured that the community would unite to provide mutual support during this difficult time. Expressing heartfelt sympathies to the families and all those impacted, she underscored the community’s solidarity and offered thoughts of care and strength to help navigate through this period of immense loss.
