EU Lawmaker Urges Strong Action Against Trump’s Greenland Threats

European lawmaker Karin Karlsbro emphasizes that actions are more significant than words when it comes to dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump. European leaders are currently at odds with Trump over his persistent threats to take over Greenland forcibly, a move vehemently opposed by the Greenlandic people and Denmark, an ally of the United States.

In response to Trump’s announcement of imposing a 10% tariff on certain EU countries for resisting U.S. control of Greenland, the EU is contemplating retaliatory measures, including utilizing the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), known as the “trade bazooka.” This tool could restrict public tenders, investments, banking activities, and trade in services as a response to coercion.

There is a division among EU members regarding the use of the “trade bazooka,” but Karlsbro, a Swedish member of the European Parliament, advocates for a strong stance. She believes it is essential to communicate effectively with Trump, suggesting that the EU should consider any economic threat to one member as an attack on the entire union, enabling a joint response with stringent measures such as tariffs or targeting U.S. investments.

Karlsbro likens the ACI to NATO’s Article 5, emphasizing unity and collective action. Despite differing opinions within the EU, she asserts that there is substantial support for Denmark and Greenland globally, ensuring a robust EU response. The aim is to demonstrate the EU’s readiness to act decisively, potentially impacting sensitive U.S. products and sectors.

Concerns about Trump’s possible escalation are acknowledged, but Karlsbro stresses the importance of a proactive approach to avoid further escalation by demonstrating a united front. The focus is on promoting dialogue and preventing changes to global order through coercion or violence.

The situation with Trump’s Greenland ambitions raises grave concerns, but Karlsbro believes that with resolute action and unity, the EU can discourage such actions and protect international stability. The objective is to prevent arbitrary changes to borders and uphold the rule of law in international relations.
