“Macron Condemns Trump’s Greenland Tariff Threat”

French President Emmanuel Macron denounced U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose steep tariffs if Europe does not comply with his desire to acquire Greenland. Macron emphasized that Europe will not yield to intimidation or bullies and will defend territorial sovereignty and the rule of law. He warned against succumbing to the “law of the strongest,” stating that Europe will not accept vassalization.

During his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Macron criticized the shift towards a world without rules and expressed a preference for respect over bullying and the rule of law over brutality. He also hinted at potential EU retaliation with trade sanctions against such behavior.

Trump’s recent actions, including threats of tariffs on French wine and champagne, have strained the relationship between the U.S. and Europe. Macron condemned Trump’s tariff strategy, labeling it as fundamentally unacceptable and a form of leverage against territorial sovereignty. The EU is preparing to convene for an emergency summit to address the Greenland issue and may implement tariffs on U.S. goods in response.

Macron advocated for considering the use of the EU’s Anti-Coercion Instrument, commonly known as the “trade bazooka,” which could restrict U.S. access to public tenders and services. The escalating dispute over Greenland has exacerbated tensions between the U.S. and Europe, particularly concerning Trump’s efforts to control the Arctic island and establish a new international organization without UN involvement.

Despite Trump’s threats and pressure, Macron affirmed his commitment to defending democratic principles and sovereignty. Their strained relationship has ebbed and flowed since Trump’s presidency began, with Macron standing firm on upholding democratic values. Macron’s decision not to extend his stay in Davos to meet with Trump further underscores the strained relations between the two leaders.
