During the ongoing trial of two women from Burlington, Ontario, who are facing charges related to the death of a boy in their care, defence attorneys cross-examined the deceased boy’s younger brother. The lawyers questioned the credibility, memory, and motives of the young witness. One of the accused women, Brandy Cooney’s defense lawyer, Kim Edward, insinuated that the boy tailored his story to please his current caregivers.

Refuting the claims, the boy, identified as J.L. to protect his identity, denied fabricating allegations against Cooney and the other accused woman, Becky Hamber, to gain favor with his caregivers.

J.L., now 13 years old, testified during the trial, recounting incidents of abuse and neglect he allegedly endured while under the care of Cooney and Hamber. The trial, which commenced in mid-September, has seen the defendants plead not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, confinement, assault with a weapon, and failure to provide necessary care to the victim.

The prosecution alleges that the accused women subjected the Indigenous children to abuse and neglect. Paramedics discovered the deceased boy, identified as L.L., in a severely malnourished and emaciated state before he succumbed to his injuries.

Throughout the trial, witnesses including medical professionals and educators have provided testimony, shedding light on the tragic circumstances surrounding the case.

During the trial, the defense raised counterarguments, suggesting that the defendants were struggling to meet the needs of children with challenging behaviors, citing inadequate support from Child Protective Services.

Allegations of Fabricated Testimony

Hamber’s defense attorney, Monte MacGregor, implied that J.L. may have fabricated evidence to support a separate lawsuit against the accused, potentially influenced by a substantial monetary reward. However, the witness denied altering his testimony for financial gain.
