Winnipeg authorities reported an incident where a child was seized by an unfamiliar individual in a restroom at a St. Vital elementary school. The occurrence led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man, identified as a registered sex offender, on charges of assault and forcible confinement.
Law enforcement responded to a call around 1:30 p.m. regarding an unknown adult who had entered the school premises and confronted a child, as detailed by Const. Dani McKinnon during a press briefing on Friday. The individual was confirmed to be a complete stranger to the school community.
Although school specifics were not disclosed by McKinnon, a memo circulated to parents by Darwin School’s principal Erin Enns pinpointed the institution as a kindergarten to Grade 8 school situated in close proximity to St. Vital Centre and affiliated with the Louis Riel School Division. Following the incident, the school enacted a hold and secure protocol, involving the lockdown of exterior doors.
The suspect reportedly concealed himself inside a restroom stall upon gaining access to the school. Upon encountering a student exiting another stall, he attempted to grab the child. The student managed to break free after a struggle and promptly informed a teacher about the encounter. Fortunately, the child did not sustain any physical injuries, as confirmed by McKinnon, who refrained from disclosing further details regarding the student.
The accused fled the scene before law enforcement arrived but was pursued by a vigilant witness to a nearby mall, identified as part of the St. Mary’s Road complex where St. Vital Centre is located. Mall security aided in locating the suspect within the parking lot, leading to his apprehension.
The arrested individual, Scott William George, aged 28, faces multiple charges, including assault, forcible confinement, and two counts of violating child-related prohibitions. George’s status as a registered sex offender stems from a previous conviction for sexual interference in 2023, resulting in a two-year sentence for an offense involving inappropriate contact with a minor under 16 years old. His criminal history dates back to 2015, encompassing convictions for various offenses such as breaking and entering, theft, mischief, and weapons-related crimes.
McKinnon emphasized that the prohibition order imposed on George aimed to prevent his contact with children or entry into child-populated environments. The motive behind the incident and the method of the suspect’s entry into the school were not disclosed by law enforcement.
Expressing concern over the distressing nature of the incident, Christian Michalik, superintendent of the Louis Riel School Division, acknowledged the courage displayed by the child involved. Plans for a comprehensive review of the situation were announced by Michalik, emphasizing the need for enhanced vigilance across all schools within the division.
In response to the incident, Darwin School’s principal Enns assured parents of available support services provided by an in-school team for students and staff as required. Authorities continue their investigation and encourage individuals with relevant information to contact the child abuse unit or Crime Stoppers anonymously. Parents are advised to educate their children on safety measures and the importance of reporting any suspicious activity to a trusted adult.
The police investigation remains ongoing, with a focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of students in educational settings.
