The 79th Cannes Film Festival has commenced, marking the start of nearly a fortnight of excitement on the French Riviera as filmmakers and celebrities grace the red carpet for the opening ceremony and the premiere of the movie “The Electric Kiss.”
The festival features a 12-day lineup of exclusive world premieres, culminating on May 23 with the prestigious Palme d’Or award presentation, one of the most esteemed accolades in the film industry. Leading this year’s Cannes jury is South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, alongside members Stellan Skarsgård, Diego Céspedes, Laura Wandel, Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao, Isaach de Bankolé, and Ruth Negga.
Among the stars expected to make appearances in the following days are Kristen Stewart, Barbra Streisand, Adam Driver, Javier Bardem, Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, Rami Malek, and many more. Celebrity sightings at the opening ceremony included model and TV personality Heidi Klum and TV personality and swimwear designer Kimberley Garner.
Filmmakers preparing to unveil their latest works include Pedro Almodóvar with “Bitter Christmas,” James Gray with “Paper Tiger,” Na Hong-jin with “Hope,” Pawel Pawlikowski with “Fatherland,” and Ryusuke Hamaguchi with “All of a Sudden.” Additionally, director Peter Jackson, this year’s recipient of the honorary Palme d’Or, was present at the opening ceremony.
The event also saw Irish reality TV personality Maura Higgins, actor Elijah Wood with his wife, Danish film producer Mette-Marie Kongsved, and actor Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu among the attendees. The opening ceremony was attended by a crowd of spectators in Cannes, France, capturing the glitz and glamour of the prestigious film festival.
