“Pest Infestation Closes Calgary Food Hall”

A food hall in Calgary has temporarily shut down due to the presence of pests, as reported by Alberta Health Services (AHS). The closure of First Street Market, situated at 1327 1st St. S.W. in Victoria Park, was initiated on November 28 following an order issued by AHS, affecting all vendors within the facility.

The decision to close the market was made after an investigation revealed pest activity within the premises, according to a spokesperson from First Street Market in a communication with CBC News. Alberta Health Services later confirmed that an inspection was conducted in response to a complaint, uncovering conditions that posed a severe risk to public health, including a notable cockroach infestation and overall unsanitary conditions.

Despite these findings, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the food hall’s conditions so far. The closure order will persist until AHS deems it safe to lift it, with thorough commercial-grade sanitation procedures underway to disinfect all surfaces, food storage areas, and preparation facilities. Treatment and follow-up inspections are also in progress, with reopening contingent on AHS approval.

Chris Gale, the general manager of Actually Pretty Good, a pizza vendor at the food market, emphasized the importance of vigilance in a shared vendor environment like theirs, where health concerns in one operation can swiftly affect others. First Street Market, which commenced operations in 2021, remains closed until further notice.
