Team Canada secured a spot in the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers by triumphing over Mexico in the Group A playoffs at Club Sonoma. Victoria Mboko from Toronto defeated Renata Zarazua in straight sets, while American-Canadian Carson Branstine from Montreal claimed victory over Julia Garcia to seal the best-of-three final.
If Canada had lost one of the singles matches, they would have been forced to compete in a must-win doubles match with Gabriela Dabrowski and Mboko facing Giuliana Olmos and Zarazua.
The road to victory for Canada began with a 2-1 win against Denmark, setting up the decisive showdown against Mexico, who had also defeated Denmark 2-1 in their previous match.
Starting the encounter against Mexico, Carson Branstine secured a crucial singles win over Julia Garcia. Branstine, who switched allegiance from the United States to Canada in 2017, showcased a strong performance to defeat Garcia in one hour and 39 minutes.
Branstine’s match statistics included one ace, three double faults, and successful defense on break points. She maintained a 65% serve points won and capitalized on return games. In contrast, Garcia managed two aces, no double faults, and struggled on break points and return games.
Reflecting on her victory, Branstine admitted feeling nervous but expressed satisfaction with her performance. On the other hand, Mboko, who also emerged victorious, highlighted the challenge of facing a talented opponent in their home country.
