Brenda Fricker, known for her roles as the “Pigeon Lady” in the movie Home Alone 2 and as Ireland’s first Oscar-winning actress for her performance in My Left Foot, passed away at the age of 81 in Dublin after a period of illness, as confirmed by her agent, Phil Belfield.
Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker’s acting career began in her late teens, spanning nearly a hundred films and TV shows over six decades. Her diverse body of work included appearances in popular British and Irish series such as ITV’s Coronation Street and BBC’s Casualty, as well as roles in various films like So I Married an Axe Murderer, A Time to Kill, Veronica Guerin, and Albert Nobbs.
Fricker’s talent extended to the stage, where she graced the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, the Royal National Theatre in London, and the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles with her performances in both classic and contemporary productions.
Her notable role in the biographical drama My Left Foot as Bridget Fagan Brown, the devoted mother of Christy Brown played by Daniel Day-Lewis, earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1990. The film’s success not only garnered critical acclaim but also played a significant role in boosting Ireland’s film industry.
Fricker’s versatility shone through in diverse roles, including her memorable portrayal in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York as a homeless woman who befriends Macaulay Culkin’s character.
In addition to her acting achievements, Fricker penned a bestselling memoir in 2025 titled She Died Young: A Life in Fragments, where she candidly shared her life experiences, from joyful moments to struggles with abuse, assault, and mental health challenges. Earlier this year, she was honored by her hometown with the Freedom of the City of Dublin.
Tributes poured in for Fricker, with Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris describing her as a national treasure and a remarkable ambassador for Irish talent on the global stage. Her legacy as an accomplished actress and storyteller will endure for generations to come.
