The ÊAkisqÌnuk First Nation is initiating a series of scientific and economic research projects concerning Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake as part of a broader water conservation strategy that has sparked discussions on recreational boating in the region. Chief (NasuÊkin) Donald Sam emphasized the significance of stewardship to the Ktunaxa people, stating that credible data is essential for decision-making.
With an investment of $200,000, the First Nation aims to map the East Kootenay lakes, study shoreline conditions, sediment movement, and evaluate the economic impact of recreation on these water bodies. While these efforts have raised concerns among some residents regarding potential restrictions impacting the local economy, Sam clarified that the intention is not to hinder economic development but to identify sustainable recreational activities that align with the lakes’ long-term well-being.
Amid escalating scrutiny of wake-surfing boats, which are known to disturb sediment, damage shorelines, and contribute to environmental harm in smaller lakes, Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake, being relatively shallow, are particularly vulnerable to wake disturbances and shoreline erosion. Stakeholders like Lake Windemere Ambassadors already advocate for motorized boaters to adhere to speed limits and regulations to mitigate environmental impacts.
Mayor Al Miller of the District of Invermere voiced support for a science-based approach to address the issue, emphasizing the importance of considering both economic and environmental factors in decision-making processes. He highlighted the need to analyze all available data to make informed decisions that prioritize the health of the lakes alongside economic considerations.
Sam assured that the stewardship planning process is in its early stages, with no immediate restrictions planned for this summer.
