The Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) has expressed concerns over the Alberta government’s use of the notwithstanding clause to end the strike of teachers, viewing it as a concerning development for democracy and worker rights. AFL President Gil McGowan criticized the government, stating they could have pursued other options but opted for what he described as a drastic measure.
Following the passing of Bill 2, known as the Back to School Act, the Alberta Teachers’ Association announced that classes would resume soon while indicating their intention to explore legal avenues in response to the legislation. The bill, protected by the notwithstanding clause, imposes significant fines on individuals and the Alberta Teachers’ Association for non-compliance with the back-to-work order.
The AFL, representing a coalition of 24 unions and approximately 175,000 workers, has aligned with other unions under the Common Front coalition to address the situation. McGowan emphasized the significance of defending worker rights and democracy, hinting at the possibility of a provincewide strike as a potential course of action.
Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides defended the legislation by emphasizing the need to prioritize students’ well-being and return them to classrooms swiftly. Finance Minister Nate Horner supported the use of the notwithstanding clause to ensure the uninterrupted operation of schools once they reopen.
McGowan underscored the broader implications of the government’s actions, highlighting the threat posed to fundamental democratic rights. Professor Jason Foster from Athabasca University echoed concerns from the labour movement, warning of the existential threat perceived due to the undermining of the right to strike and engage in collective bargaining.
The labour movement is gearing up for a potential significant response, with union leaders scheduled to unveil their action plan at a forthcoming press conference. McGowan also indicated on social media that national labor organizations were mobilizing resources to support the cause, underscoring the solidarity within the labor movement.
