“Amazon Resolves Global Cloud Outage: Services Back Online”

Amazon has announced the resolution of a significant outage in its cloud computing service as of Monday evening. The disruption had a global impact, affecting various online services like social media, gaming, food delivery, streaming, and financial platforms. Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported the start of recovery about three hours after the outage began early Monday, with services returning to normal operations by 6 p.m. ET, as per Amazon’s AWS health website.

AWS, Amazon’s cloud services unit, offers on-demand computing power, data storage, and digital services to businesses, governments, and individuals. Any disruptions to its servers can lead to outages across websites and platforms relying on its cloud infrastructure. Monday morning’s outage affected social media apps such as Snapchat and Reddit, causing disruptions worldwide.

The company identified the issue around 3:10 a.m. ET and reported gradual restoration of services by 6 a.m. ET. An update posted at 10:30 a.m. ET mentioned early signs of recovery for connectivity issues, attributing the root cause to an internal subsystem monitoring the network load balancers.

As of 5:48 p.m. ET, Amazon was still working on fully restoring services, with previous updates indicating that the issues mainly originated from its US-EAST-1 Region. By 2:20 p.m. ET, outage tracking website Downdetector had received over 13 million reports related to the incident, including more than 351,000 from Canada.

Various services experienced disruptions due to the outage, with reports from companies like the Toronto Blue Jays, Snapchat, Pinterest, Amazon’s shopping website, Prime Video, Alexa chatbot, Wealthsimple, Perplexity, Coinbase, Robinhood, Slack, Trint, Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, Clash of Clans, Venmo, Chime, Lyft, Signal, Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Vodafone, BT, and HMRC.

AWS, competing with Google and Microsoft’s cloud services, holds a significant market share in the cloud infrastructure market. The incident underscored the dependence of digital services on a few global cloud providers, emphasizing the interconnected nature of today’s digital landscape. Experts highlighted the complexity of technology infrastructure and the potential impact of such outages on billions of people globally.

The AWS outage marked a major internet disruption following last year’s CrowdStrike malfunction. With the world increasingly reliant on cloud technology, cybersecurity experts caution about potential cyber incidents given the vast reach and influence of cloud service providers like AWS in everyday life.
