RCMP reported the arrest of an individual linked to a protest camp at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, B.C., after an alleged arson and assault incident at a nearby property. The person was released on conditions not to return to the area. The incident occurred on Sept. 22 when officers, accompanied by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), were enforcing warrants related to the planned cull of over 300 ostriches due to avian flu detected on the farm in December.
The farm, situated around 100 kilometers east of Kelowna, has contested the cull order in court, garnering a significant following of supporters who oppose what they perceive as government overreach, including individuals associated with previous movements like the Freedom Convoy.
Katie Pasitney, the farm’s spokesperson, has emphasized peaceful protests through Facebook videos and condemned the reported incident. Despite mostly peaceful protests, police received reports of threats toward neighbors and businesses supporting the cull.
The suspect, allegedly linked to the protest camp, was arrested without resistance and released on conditions barring them from the property and contact with the victim. Pasitney denounced the threats in a social media post and expressed support for police actions.
Ongoing investigations involve incidents where hay bales near the ostrich enclosure were set on fire and two ostriches were reportedly shot and killed. Tensions have escalated, with some neighbors and businesses expressing concerns about encounters with farm supporters.
Pasitney urged supporters to peacefully engage with businesses assisting the CFIA during the cull process. She clarified that threats were unacceptable and mentioned a specific company, Nucor Environmental Solutions, which denied involvement in the cull but faced threats against its employees and families.
The CFIA warned against obstructing its operations and noted online campaigns disrupting its services. Pasitney maintained that the farm gatherings were peaceful and family-oriented, despite rising tensions amid the CFIA taking over the property.
Allegations of mistreatment of ostriches by the CFIA were raised by farm supporters, while the CFIA stated its care for the birds, addressing pre-existing conditions and allowing a visit by one of the bird owners. The CFIA affirmed the well-being of the ostriches under its supervision.
