Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced Canada’s collaboration with India and Australia on cutting-edge technologies during the G20 summit in South Africa. The trilateral pact aims to foster cooperation among the three democracies in enhancing supply chain diversity, promoting clean energy, and advancing the adoption of artificial intelligence.
This initiative marks a significant step as Canada seeks to strengthen its ties with India following a period of strained relations attributed to allegations by the RCMP implicating New Delhi in the murder and extortion of Canadian nationals.
In a joint statement issued on Saturday, the trio unveiled the formation of the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation Partnership (ACITI). The partnership will leverage the inherent strengths of the three nations with a focus on innovation in green energy and the establishment of robust supply chains, particularly in critical minerals. Additionally, the collaboration will explore the advancement and widespread application of artificial intelligence to enhance the quality of life for their citizens.
The announcement outlined plans for officials from the three countries to convene in the initial quarter of 2026 to propel the initiative forward. Carney is currently in Johannesburg for the G20 summit, where most leaders have endorsed a collective declaration despite a boycott by the United States. The statement encompasses commitments to addressing climate change, promoting women’s rights, and addressing issues in the Middle East, which the Trump administration had previously opposed at various junctures this year.
