Canada aims to construct up to 10 new nuclear reactors within the next 15 years, expand the sale of Canadian-made reactors globally, and double uranium exports, according to Energy Minister Tim Hodgson. This initiative is part of a national strategy for nuclear power, described by Hodgson as a pathway to a “new civilian nuclear renaissance” to enhance the country’s electrical grid capacity by 2050.
Hodgson emphasized the necessity of nuclear energy for achieving the goal of doubling Canada’s grid and establishing a low-carbon economy rapidly. He stressed that nuclear power provides clean and dependable baseload power critical for advancing Canada’s energy goals and maintaining its status as an energy superpower.
The strategy outlines plans to commence construction on two large-scale reactors by 2035, with five additional reactors planned or in development by 2040. Moreover, it envisions deploying a Canadian-made microreactor to a remote community by the late 2030s.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed skepticism about the plan, highlighting the need for tangible outcomes rather than mere announcements. Currently, Canada operates four nuclear power plants, with a proposed facility at the Darlington nuclear plant in Ontario set to house the G7’s first small modular reactor capable of generating up to 300 megawatts per unit.
Collaboration agreements between Ottawa and Alberta aim to facilitate the construction of a nuclear power plant, while construction costs for the outlined reactors in the strategy could exceed $100 billion. Hodgson anticipates doubling the employment in Canada’s nuclear sector in the coming years.
The plan also seeks to expand the export of Candu reactors to new markets, with a focus on establishing Canada as a reliable uranium supplier and leveraging nuclear energy for geopolitical influence. The strategy emphasizes the long-term partnerships established through reactor exports and their role in advancing Canada’s foreign policy interests.
Despite the strategy’s ambitious goals, potential challenges lie in securing funding for the proposed reactors. The proposal encourages exploring options such as the Canadian Infrastructure Bank and the Canada Growth Fund for financing.
In the event of limited success in selling Candu reactors globally, the strategy suggests enhancing domestic uranium enrichment to support other reactors. The strategy also addresses regulatory reforms, including transferring impact assessments for nuclear projects to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
While the strategy outlines a comprehensive vision for Canada’s nuclear future, ongoing consultations and challenges remain to ensure its successful implementation.
