“Canadian Olympian Charles Philibert-Thiboutot Retires After NYC Marathon Debut”

Canadian runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, a two-time Olympian, has announced his retirement and looks forward to some well-deserved rest after completing his marathon debut in New York City. The 34-year-old finished 21st in the professional men’s group with a time of two hours, 26 minutes, and 25 seconds. Despite facing cramps around the 28-29 kilometer mark, he pushed through to finish the race.

Philibert-Thiboutot concludes his illustrious 15-year track and road racing career on a high note, having achieved personal best times in various events. Notable highlights include setting a national record of 28 minutes and six seconds at the Canadian 10K Road Running Championships and securing victories in multiple competitions.

The Quebec City athlete, a six-time Canadian champion in the 1,500 meters, has had a successful career with top-three finishes in various track events. Although he didn’t qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Philibert-Thiboutot showcased his talent and determination throughout his career, culminating in a season-best performance at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

In the same event, Kenyan runner Hellen Obiri set a new women’s course record, while Benson Kipruto narrowly won the men’s race in a thrilling finish.
