A Canadian tourist, Piper James, was tragically discovered deceased on a beach in Australia. Piper, a 19-year-old from Campbell River, B.C., had aspirations of obtaining her pilot’s license upon her return from her travels. Her father, Todd James, expressed how eagerly she anticipated this next chapter in her life, planning to embark on this journey together as he is a pilot himself.
Piper’s body was found on K’gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, at 6:35 a.m. local time after setting an alarm for 5 a.m. to witness the sunrise and enjoy a morning swim. Queensland police reported that two men came across her body on the beach, surrounded by approximately 10 dingoes, leading to the discovery of her untimely passing.
Authorities could not immediately determine the cause of death, speculating whether she drowned while swimming and was attacked by dingoes, drowned while fleeing dingoes into the water, or was directly attacked and killed by the animals on the beach. Piper’s father praised her strength, citing her previous work at the B.C. Wildfire Service where her resilience and determination were evident.
Piper had been backpacking along the Australian coast with her friend, Taylor, celebrating their 19th birthdays together. A spokesperson from the Coroners Court of Queensland mentioned that while an autopsy has been conducted, further testing is required to establish the exact cause of death.
James revealed that Piper had saved up from her work at the B.C. Wildfire Service to fund her Australian trip. The service expressed condolences and emphasized supporting Piper’s family and colleagues during this difficult time.
