The Israeli military announced on Wednesday its commitment to the ceasefire in Gaza, following airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of 104 individuals, with both sides pointing fingers at each other for violations of the agreement. Despite this, the military conducted another airstrike in northern Gaza, targeting an area where weapons were reportedly stored, resulting in two casualties.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, among those killed in the Israeli airstrikes since Tuesday were 46 children and 20 women. The death of an Israeli soldier in Gaza on Tuesday sparked heightened tensions, marking the most significant escalation since the ceasefire began on Oct. 10.
Israel asserted that the soldier was killed in an attack by gunmen within the designated “yellow line,” where Israeli troops had withdrawn as part of the truce. In contrast, Hamas denied responsibility and reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire pact. Israel emphasized its adherence to the ceasefire while maintaining a firm stance against any violations.
Neighbours in the central Gaza refugee camp of Nuseirat reported the tragic loss of an entire family in an overnight airstrike that razed their home. Witnessing the somber scene of the family’s bodies being transported in body bags, the community mourned the loss of approximately nine individuals from the Abu Dalal family.
In another account, Hamada Subaih recounted sheltering with his family in a school in northern Gaza, narrowly escaping an airstrike that claimed his father’s life. Expressing profound grief, Subaih shared his emotional turmoil, highlighting the irreplaceable loss he experienced.
While the U.S.-backed ceasefire faced challenges due to recent hostilities, U.S. President Donald Trump assured that the ceasefire remained intact despite the incidents. Displaced Palestinians expressed concerns about the fragility of the truce, with many fearing a potential collapse given the resurgence of violence.
The ceasefire agreement, initiated on Oct. 10 to quell the turmoil in the region, involved the release of hostages by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and detainees held by Israel. The ceasefire was marred by disputes over the retrieval of human remains, with Hamas committing to locate and surrender the bodies, while Israel accused Hamas of manipulating the recovery process.
The issue of human remains has emerged as a significant challenge to the ceasefire, with international observers closely monitoring the developments. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized Hamas for allegedly staging the recovery of remains to mislead international efforts, causing distress among families awaiting closure.
The Red Cross condemned the falsified recovery incident, emphasizing the critical need for upholding the ceasefire agreement and the significance of transparent processes. Amidst escalating tensions, the ceasefire’s stability hinges on addressing contentious issues and fostering mutual trust between the conflicting parties.
