25-year-old Eli Wood has been missing from his residence in Kitchener for over six weeks under circumstances that raise suspicion. In response, the community is organizing a ground search this Sunday in an effort to uncover any clues related to his disappearance.
Wood vanished following a fire that engulfed his Kitchener home on October 19, and he has not been sighted by his acquaintances or family members since then. Investigators from the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) have determined that the fire was an act of arson deliberately targeted at Wood’s residence, leading them to suspect foul play in his disappearance.
Wood, a student enrolled in the master of social work program at Wilfrid Laurier University, is described as four feet 10 inches tall and a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
Although Meghan Mathieson does not personally know Wood, she became involved in a Facebook group dedicated to discussing his disappearance. Her suggestion of organizing a search party gained significant traction among group members.
Expressing concern for Wood’s mother, Mathieson highlighted the anguish of not having any leads or new information on Wood’s whereabouts. She emphasized the importance of instilling hope in the community and supporting Wood’s family in their search for answers.
While the police have not disclosed any new developments in the case, they assured that their investigation remains active. In a statement, the Waterloo Regional Police Service acknowledged the public’s interest in the matter but emphasized the need to protect the investigation’s integrity by limiting the information shared.
Wood’s family echoed the police’s sentiments, appreciating the community’s support and emphasizing the importance of refraining from spreading unverified information on social media, as it could hinder the ongoing police inquiry.
Reflecting on the impact of Wood’s disappearance, Mathieson emphasized the lack of closure and answers surrounding the case, underscoring the personal connection she feels to the situation.
Wood’s mother, Cindy Wood Amero, has refrained from media interviews but remains active on social media, regularly posting updates to raise awareness about her son’s disappearance.
The community is gearing up for the ground search scheduled for Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with the meeting point designated at the parking lot of 326 Riverbend Dr. in Kitchener.
Volunteers are advised to come prepared for the weather and are encouraged to bring essential items such as a walking safety stick, safety vest, and warm clothing.
The search team comprises individuals with diverse skills, including Diana Storey and her husband Trevor, who possess medical expertise and are prepared to offer immediate aid if needed during the search. They are also exploring the possibility of involving search and rescue dogs in future search operations.
Storey emphasized the importance of maintaining hope and continuing the search efforts, noting that valuable leads often surface from community-driven searches, potentially aiding the official investigation.
