“Conservative Leader Faces Backlash Over RCMP Comments”

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre faced continued backlash on Wednesday over his remarks about the RCMP and its leadership, attempting to clarify his stance on whether individuals should face jail time for the Liberal government’s actions.

During an interview with the YouTube channel Northern Perspective, Poilievre criticized the RCMP leadership as “despicable,” alleging they covered up for former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He suggested that Trudeau should have faced criminal charges for accepting a vacation from the Aga Khan if the RCMP had properly investigated.

Poilievre later clarified his statement, emphasizing that he did not explicitly call for Trudeau to be imprisoned but suggested that certain scandals under the Liberal government warranted severe punishment. Despite his attempts to clarify, some Conservative MPs expressed concerns over his comments about the RCMP, with internal tensions arising within the party.

While Poilievre received support from some caucus members, there were reports of dissent among Conservative MPs, questioning his leadership following his critical remarks about the RCMP. Poilievre reiterated his stance on the RCMP’s leadership, particularly targeting former Commissioner Brenda Lucki for alleged scandals and interference benefiting the Liberal government.

Conservative figures like Michael Barrett supported Poilievre’s precision in addressing Lucki’s controversies but acknowledged internal disagreements. Poilievre’s criticism extended to the present RCMP leadership, describing the force as “despicable.” Despite the criticism, Poilievre stood by his assertions and expressed willingness to discuss his concerns with current RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme.

In response to criticisms, Conservative Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman emphasized the party’s confidence in frontline police officers. She highlighted past disagreements with the Liberals over policing issues, including accusations of systemic racism within the RCMP.

While Poilievre received backing from some party members, dissenting voices within the Conservative ranks raised concerns about his approach, with critics labeling his rhetoric as reckless and rooted in grievance rather than effective governance.
