Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s recent criticism of RCMP leadership has sparked concerns among some party members regarding their continued support for him. Several Conservative caucus members, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed reservations about Poilievre’s messaging consistency post-election, questioning his suitability as a potential prime minister.
In conversations with Radio-Canada, a total of 10 Conservative insiders, including seven caucus members, shared their perspectives. Four sources indicated uncertainty about backing Poilievre in an upcoming confidence vote, despite supporting him previously. One source criticized Poilievre’s suggestion that a former prime minister should face imprisonment, deeming it irresponsible.
During an appearance on the YouTube channel Northern Perspective, Poilievre asserted that former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau violated the law in relation to the Aga Khan scandal and the SNC-Lavalin affair. He accused the RCMP of concealing these alleged transgressions and condemned their leadership as “despicable” for not holding the Liberal government accountable.
Critics within the party believe Poilievre’s recent remarks diminish his chances of becoming prime minister, with one MP suggesting he remains fixated on Trudeau and struggles to move past his electoral loss. Concerned party members plan to seek clarification from Poilievre during an upcoming caucus meeting.
Despite the internal dissent, many Conservatives acknowledge Poilievre’s enduring support within the party. In defense of his leader, Pierre Paul-Hus, Poilievre’s Quebec lieutenant, expressed confidence in Poilievre’s leadership qualities, attributing the attacks on the RCMP to criticisms of former commissioner Brenda Lucki.
In a statement released by Poilievre, he clarified that his comments were directed specifically at Lucki, highlighting her history of controversies and alleged political interference favoring the Liberal government. While some view Poilievre’s remarks as missteps, others downplay the significance, emphasizing the leader’s unique political style and past electoral success.
A source close to Poilievre commended his authenticity, attributing it to the party’s strong performance in the recent federal election. Despite the current discord, some Conservatives advocate for giving Poilievre a second chance, drawing parallels to former Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s successful bid after an initial defeat.
