Conservative MP Jamil Jivani is spearheading a movement and sparking a national dialogue with a fundamental question in mind. At the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), Jivani posed the query of how to revitalize the North and ensure Canada’s promise reaches as many individuals as possible.
Jivani initiated the “Restore the North” campaign last month, focusing on bridging policy gaps to support young men disproportionately affected by crime, overdoses, and homelessness. Following the tragic death of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the initiative evolved into campus tours blending elements of a rally, recruitment effort, and debate.
During these campus visits across southern Ontario, participants engage in discussions with three Conservative MPs, rotating except for Jivani, who leads the events. The setup mirrors Kirk’s impactful campus gatherings in the U.S., which amplified the MAGA message. Young men attending these events expressed concerns over limited job prospects and challenges navigating identity politics, including issues like “toxic masculinity.”
Attendees at the Mississauga event on October 17 shared their perspectives, highlighting feelings of marginalization and economic pressures, particularly affecting young men, with unemployment rates peaking at 22% this year. Jivani’s efforts resonate with a growing demographic within the Conservative base, as noted by Conservative strategist Ginny Roth, emphasizing a shift towards a younger voter profile.
Jivani, a rising figure in Canadian Conservative circles, gained prominence through his book “Why Young Men,” delving into radicalization causes among youth while recounting his personal journey. Advocating for youth well before his parliamentary tenure, Jivani aims to inspire hope and resilience among young Canadians, emphasizing the importance of not giving up.
While Jivani refrained from a CBC interview, his stance on various contentious topics, from Christian rights advocacy to challenging prevailing ideologies, sets him apart within the Conservative ranks. Acknowledging the evolving Conservative voter landscape, Roth emphasized the party’s efforts to appeal to a younger constituency.
The discussion extends to the realm of free speech on campuses, a hotly debated topic fueling political engagement among young individuals. Jivani’s commitment to fostering open dialogue and diverse viewpoints aligns with his vision of empowering youth to navigate societal challenges. Despite differing opinions and risks associated with their initiatives, Jivani and his supporters prioritize engaging in constructive debates to drive political discourse forward.
