Disney+ is increasing its subscription prices in Canada once again. The popular streaming platform housing iconic franchises like Star Wars and Marvel will be implementing a price hike of up to $3 per month starting in November.
According to a spokesperson for the company, the standard high-definition subscription will see a $3 increase, bringing the monthly cost to $15.99. Additionally, the premium 4K package will also go up by $1 to $16.99 per month. However, the price for the standard subscription with advertisements will remain unchanged at $8.99 per month.
Similar price adjustments are being introduced by Disney+ in various regions, including the United States and the United Kingdom. This move aligns with a trend among streaming services to promote ad-supported options, which offer lower subscription fees but generate additional revenue through commercials.
The last time Disney+ raised prices in Canada was around two years ago, while other major streaming platforms such as Netflix and Apple TV Plus have also increased their subscription rates this year. Additionally, Disney+ is undergoing a rebranding process, replacing the Star branding with Hulu in all international markets, including Canada. This change aims to bring Disney+ Canada in closer alignment with the U.S. and global markets without affecting the content selection.
In recent news, Disney+ faced a public backlash last month following a consumer boycott over the handling of the Jimmy Kimmel controversy. The Disney-owned TV network ABC suspended Kimmel in mid-September for remarks concerning the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, sparking debates on freedom of speech within the entertainment industry.
Overall, these pricing adjustments and rebranding efforts by Disney+ reflect the evolving landscape of the streaming industry as companies navigate the balance between subscriber satisfaction and revenue growth.
