British singer Dua Lipa has taken legal action against Samsung Electronics, seeking damages exceeding $15 million US. The lawsuit claims that Samsung unlawfully used her image to promote its TV sets without her consent. The image in question, titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” is owned by Lipa, according to the lawsuit filed in a California federal court.
Samsung Electronics declined to provide a comment on the ongoing litigation, while Dua Lipa’s representatives did not immediately respond to requests for statements. In addition to alleging copyright and trademark violations, Lipa has accused Samsung of violating her publicity rights.
Lipa’s legal team submitted evidence of social media interactions showing that consumers were influenced to purchase Samsung TVs due to the presence of the pop star’s image on the packaging. Despite Lipa’s previous demands for Samsung to cease using her image, the company allegedly continued to do so, causing harm to her brand identity and commercial reputation.
The singer’s legal representatives argue that Samsung’s unauthorized use of Dua Lipa’s image misleads the public into believing she supports and endorses the products, leading to a negative impact on her brand.
