“Environment Canada Introduces New Colour-Coded Weather Alerts”

Environment and Climate Change Canada has updated its weather alert system nationwide. The previous general watches and warnings have been replaced with a new colour-coded, tiered system to provide clearer information on how the weather forecast will impact individuals and what preparations are needed.

These changes are in line with recommendations from the World Meteorological Association and have been adopted by 31 weather agencies in Europe. Environment and Climate Change Canada will still issue various warnings such as severe thunderstorm alerts, rainfall warnings, snowfall warnings, and wind warnings throughout the year. Special weather statements will also continue to be issued in grey to provide important information about potentially significant weather events that do not meet the criteria for a warning.

Under the new system, each warning will now be assigned a colour-coded alert level of yellow, orange, or red based on the expected impacts of the weather event and the confidence in the forecast. The severity of the alert level will correspond to the potential impacts and the certainty of those impacts occurring.

Yellow alerts, the most common warning level, will cover a wide range of hazardous weather situations that could affect travel, cause delays or cancellations, and lead to health-related issues like reduced air quality or heat warnings. Orange alerts will indicate storms likely to cause widespread or significant damage, such as severe wind storms or crippling ice storms. These warnings will require individuals to take action to protect themselves and their property.

The highest alert level, red, signifies dangerous and potentially life-threatening weather conditions. Under a red alert, extensive disruptions to travel and power, widespread damage to property and infrastructure, and severe weather events like hurricanes or heavy snowstorms are expected. It is crucial to act promptly and take necessary precautions when a red alert is issued to ensure safety.

The objective of the new system is to enhance storm preparedness by focusing on the potential impacts of the weather rather than just the weather itself. When a warning is issued, it is essential to carefully read the content to understand the specific weather situation being addressed and take appropriate measures.
