“Exploring Cities Through Smell: The Power of Olfactory Experiences”

Kate McLean-Mackenzie, a researcher at the University of Kent, leads sensory experiences known as “smell walks” in various cities. During these walks, participants rely solely on their sense of smell to perceive their surroundings, focusing on both distant and nearby scents.

McLean-Mackenzie emphasizes the importance of experiencing places not just visually, but also through olfaction. She believes that smelling a location can alter one’s perspective, prompting a deeper appreciation for the environment. Over the past 15 years, she has meticulously documented the aromas of 40 towns and cities worldwide for her forthcoming book, “Atlas of Scents and Smells.”

The concept of “smellscapes” is central to McLean-Mackenzie’s research, where she translates data collected during smell walks into olfactory maps. She describes a smellscape as the olfactory counterpart to a visual landscape, representing the scents present in a given area.

In her atlas, McLean-Mackenzie recounts the distinct odors of different locations. For instance, Antarctica is characterized by the smell of deceased seals intermingled with the metallic scent of machinery used at the Rothera Research Station. In Kyiv, Ukraine, she recalls a blend of historical elements such as pine forests, river scents, and hints of summertime vegetation.

McLean-Mackenzie emphasizes the evolving nature of scent environments, noting how changes in locations and industries lead to shifts in smellscapes over time. By documenting these olfactory profiles, she aims to preserve the essence of cities amidst transformation.

Moreover, McLean-Mackenzie acknowledges the subjective nature of scent perception but highlights the power of shared olfactory experiences in forging connections among individuals. She believes that the emotional resonance of scents is a vital aspect of her work, capturing not just odors but also the associated feelings they evoke.

Despite the complexity of smellscapes, McLean-Mackenzie finds joy in unraveling the stories behind each scent. She emphasizes the emotional significance attached to specific smells and the multifaceted nature of olfactory compositions in different locales. When asked about her favorite scent, she enthusiastically mentions the unique blend found inside a garden shed, showcasing her deep appreciation for the intricate tapestry of odors in our surroundings.
